The Risks of Sexual Activity

Sexually active teens may not be able to admit the possible consequences of sexual activity. Some of these risks are emotional, e.g. guilt about lying to parents, and or losing self-esteem and self-respect when going against values. Physical complications like unplanned pregnancy and STDs are also possible with sexual activity.

  • Around 800,000 to 900,000 female teenagers get pregnant each year.
  • 1 in 10 female teens get pregnant each year.
  • 1 in 5 sexually active female teens get pregnant each year.
  • Teen pregnancy and birth rates are some of the highest of any industrialized nation in the west.
  • The majority of these pregnant women are not married
  • The bones and muscles of teens are not ready for the hardships of pregnancy.
  • Medical attention is required to ensure the health of the baby and the mother.
