  • Life skill - tool for building a healthy life
  • Coping - Dealing with problems and troubles in an effective way
  • Consumer - A person who buys products or services
  • Resource - Something that you can use to achieve a goal

Life Skills

Life skills help improve the six components of health. E.g. a skill can improve your social health by teaching communication.

Some can effect all six components. E.g. making good decisions. Decisions are everywhere in the six components.

Ten life skills

  1. Assessing your health - Allows you to figure out what improves or worsens your health.
  2. Communicating effectively - Can strengthen relationships with others
  3. Practicing wellness - How to practice healthy behaviors daily
  4. Coping - Helps with difficult times, situations and emotions
  5. Being a wise consumer - Helps make good decisions when buying health products and services
  6. Evaluating media messages - Take in information and gauge what is correct and incorrect, can help make better decisions about health
  7. Using community resources - E.g. using libraries, health clinics and Gov. agencies to better health
  8. Making GREAT decisions - Model for making better decisions, better health decisions
  9. Using refusal skills - Avoid risky situations with refusal skills, e.g. avoiding alcohol/drugs
  10. Setting goals - Tips on how to reach goals. Ref. Section2.4
